“What’s in your flat lay kit” is a question I get asked by my mentees and other photographers all the time. I believe less is more and I don’t like to go too crazy. I don’t bring in too many crazy props to keep the flat lays feeling authentic to my couples. Flat lays used to scare the living bejesus out of me but after lots of practice, they have become second nature! Keep scrolling to see what’s in my kit and what I ask my couples to prepare!
What I bring:
I send my brides a Details Photos Checklist one month before their wedding. Here’s what I ask them to prepare and set aside for me for the morning of their wedding:
- I have my brides to ask their florist ahead of time for some loose blooms and leaves but sometimes they forget so I’ll just ask the florist when I see her at the wedding
- their rings (engagement ring and BOTH wedding bands. If you don’t ask ahead of time, sometimes the best man will already have them.)
- other jewelry (and I ask them to make sure to let me know if something is a family heirloom/sentimental)
- full invitation suite
- vow books
- menus, seating cards, table numbers
- wooden or custom hangers for their dress and their bridesmaids’ dresses. The photos will be much prettier than if they have them on mismatched/plastic hangers
- wedding shoes
For the grooms, I ask them to set aside their: tie, jacket, watch, socks + shoes, boutonniere, belt, cufflinks, a liquor or beer bottle (or whatever they’re drinking while getting ready), cigars, cologne, etc.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! As always, I’m an open book!!
